Case Study: Meet the Buchanans

Client: True TV

Project: press materials and social media management for Meet the Buchanans

Meet the Buchanans is the story of how history is made (up). A feature documentary supported by Screen Scotland, Meet the Buchanans follows the titular family as they prepare for the inauguration of the first Buchanan Clan Chief in over 300 years.

Building a community and brand identity on social media

My main mission for this film has been to build an online community of interest around the film, and maintain a consistent brand identity across its digital outputs, to coincide with its World and UK premiere screenings. Adapted from my key art design for the film, I produced a series of social media graphics templates, as well as a social media schedule to share information, festival announcements, screening photos, and short clips from the film.

So far, we have built a tight community around the film through direct online engagement with international Scottish clan memberships and local/historical interest groups. Following three festival screenings (one USA and two UK), the social media activity is on hiatus but will ramp up again in 2025 following some TBC announcements!

One of my favourite parts of working on this film’s marketing has been creating short social media clips. Having worked on the film in different capacities for a long time (I previously consulted on cuts, and created a pitch deck for the film), my familiarity with the story has come in handy for editing clips that capture the heart, humour and historical interest of the documentary – as well as short vlogs of the US and UK premiere screenings.

Press materials

I also worked in close collaboration with the producer to create an EPK (electronic press kit) for the film. So far, this EPK has been used to provide materials to festivals for their promotional strategies, as well as to secure press coverage around the US and UK premiere screenings.
