Case Study: Breaking Waves

Client: Emergence films

Project: key art design

Breaking Waves is a new documentary from director Alice Rosso, produced by Emergence Films. It follows the incredible story of Kelda Wood, the first para-athlete to row across the Atlantic Ocean solo. Emergence Films asked if I’d be interested in creating the poster design for the film, and I jumped at the chance: what an incredible story to illustrate!

It was a really fun creative challenge to produce the artwork. We had a limited selection of stills, and it was particularly difficult to illustrate the exact mountain that Kelda had summited – which is also a key component of her story. The team and I eventually opted for a ‘fictional’ mountain, created digitally from composites and inspired by the specific mountain’s shape; combined with a powerful image of Kelda’s boat crossing the ocean. The intention was to create a poetic representation of Kelda’s achievements, and to play with scale; emphasising the gigantic sizes of the terrains she has tackled.

The film has since been selected for the Kendal Mountain Film Festival and the Vancouver International Mountain Film Festival.
